Wholly Hemp: From Roots to Flowers, A Complete Utilization Story

As growers of industrial hemp here in Central Minnesota, we continue to be in awe of the mighty hemp plant. We truly love the fact that the entire plant is usable and extremely versatile. Geek out with us as we break down each of the benefits of this green machine of a crop, from roots to tips.

Roots: The Underground Heroes
Let’s start from the bottom—literally. Hemp roots aren’t just anchoring the plant; they play a significant role in soil health. As hemp grows, its deep, dense root system does the dirty work of preventing soil erosion and pulling toxic heavy metals out of contaminated ground. Farmers love them, as they’re an excellent choice for land that needs to be rehabilitated.

Stalks: The Industrial Powerhouse
The stalk is where hemp really gets to roll up its sleeves and get to work. Hemp stalks are primarily used for their strong fibers, which make them a sustainable alternative to wood and synthetic fibers. The outer layer, known as bast fiber, is strong yet flexible, making it perfect for creating durable clothing that’s more breathable than cotton and requires far less water to produce. The woody core, or hurd, finds its way into construction as a sustainable building material called hempcrete, and is also used on its own for superior animal bedding. Hemp stalks are also used to create biodegradable plastics, which help reduce our reliance on fossil fuels and cut down on plastic waste.

Leaves: Green and Good for You
Hemp leaves aren’t just sitting pretty – they’re functional, flexible, and nutritious. Hemp leaves can be juiced, brewed into tea, or added to salads for a healthy boost. They’re often used in the creation of hemp-based products like natural paper, which reduces the reliance on trees for paper production. Some folks even use hemp leaves as a natural mulch to enrich garden soil and protect plants.

Seeds: Small but Mighty
Don’t let their tiny size fool you. Hemp seeds are packed with protein, healthy fats, and important minerals, making them a superfood in the truest sense of the word. They are a great addition to smoothies, salads, and baked goods. Often called “hemp hearts,” these little seeds live up to their name in more ways than one. Not only are they the nutritious center of the plant, but they’re also packed with omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids; essential nutrients known to promote heart health.

Environmental Impact: The Real Game Changer
Beyond its many uses, hemp is a superstar when it comes to environmental impact. It grows quickly, needing little water, and naturally resists pests, reducing the need for harmful pesticides. Hemp absorbs CO2 from the atmosphere as it grows, making it a powerful ally in the fight against climate change.
