This launch represents a significant step toward a greener future, supporting both environmental responsibility and market innovation. Get in with the green — here’s a little backstory on this wonder plant…

If you’re asking yourself, what are hemp hearts? Let us explain: hemp hearts are the shelled seeds of the So, what is Hemp Hurd? Hemp hurd, also known as hemp shiv, is the woody core of the hemp stalk, separated during the fiber processing stage. Considered a byproduct of hemp fiber processing, hemp hurd is typically separated from the outer bast fibers. Hemp hurd is lightweight, highly absorbent, and has excellent insulative properties. Unlike hemp fiber, which is long and stringy, hurd consists of small, lightweight wood-like chips that offer unique properties for various applications.

Key Properties:
  • Lightweight – Easy to transport and handle
  • Highly Absorbent – Can retain significant moisture, making it ideal for multiple uses
  • Biodegradable & Renewable – A fully sustainable material that decomposes naturally, leaving no harmful waste behind

Hemp Hurd is woody and comes from the stalk of the hemp plant. It’s light, woody, and fibrous with primary uses in industrial and commercial applications.

Great Uses for Hemp Hurd:
  • Construction (insulation, insulative boards, acoustic panels, erosion socks, hempcrete)
  • Animal bedding (highly absorbent)
  • Paper and bio-plastics
  • Mulch, soil improvement, and erosion control
  • Biofuels and industrial applications

Hemp hurd is produced through a process called decortication, which separates the woody inner core from the fibrous outer layer of the hemp stalk. A typical four-step production process includes:

1. Harvesting
  • Hemp plants are grown and harvested once they reach maturity, usually between 3-4 months.
  • With such a fast growth cycle, we typically can get two harvest rotations per year.
  • The stalks are cut and left to rett. No, not left to right, retting refers to the natural decomposition process where harvested hemp stalks are left in the field (dew retting) or immersed in water (water retting) to break down the compounds binding the bast fibers to the woody core, facilitating easier separation for fiber extraction a natural decomposition process) in the field to help break down the bonds between the fibers and the woody core.
2. Bale & Transport
  • The stalks are collected and put into bales so we can efficiently transport them to our Green Fox facility.
3. Decortication (Separation of Fiber & Hurd)
  • The dried stalks are processed using a decorticator, a machine that crushes and separates the outer fiber (bast) from the woody inner core (hurd).
  • The hurd is broken into smaller pieces and sorted based on size and quality.
4. Cleaning & Packaging
  • The hurd is further processed to remove dust and unwanted fibers.
  • It is then bagged and sold for various applications such as animal bedding, mulch, or eco-friendly building materials.

Hemp hurd’s versatility makes it a valuable resource across industries, from construction to agriculture and beyond.

1. Animal Bedding
  • Its high absorbency makes it an excellent choice for livestock bedding.
  • Reduces odor and dust, improving animal comfort and welfare via natural resistance to pests.
  • 100% biodegradable, offering an eco-friendly alternative to wood shavings and straw.
2. Soil & Erosion Control
  • Used as mulch to improve soil structure, retain moisture, and suppress weeds.
  • Enhances composting efforts by adding a natural carbon source.
  • Supports organic farming practices as a chemical-free, sustainable alternative.
  • Hemp hurd-based erosion socks create a strong barrier against runoff, protect water quality, and create an ideal environment for plants to grow, providing effective and eco-friendly erosion control.
3. Industrial Applications
  • Utilized in sustainable paper and engineered wood products, an alternative to wood pulp for making eco-friendly paper.
  • A key ingredient in biodegradable plastics, reducing reliance on petroleum-based materials.
  • Used in eco-packaging solutions, reinforcing sustainability in product manufacturing.

The market trends and growth potential for hemp hurd are promising as the global push for sustainability continues to accelerate. With industries increasingly focused on eco-friendly materials, hemp hurd is emerging as a versatile and valuable resource. Its unique properties make it a rising star in multiple sectors, including construction, agriculture, packaging, and manufacturing.

One of the most significant areas of growth is the green construction boom. As builders seek carbon-negative and sustainable materials, hempcrete and other hemp-based solutions are gaining traction for their strength, durability, and environmental benefits. In agriculture, sustainable practices are on the rise, with organic farmers and permaculture advocates increasingly utilizing hemp hurd to enhance soil quality and support composting efforts.

Beyond construction and agriculture, the industrial applications of hemp hurd are expanding rapidly. Market research projects significant growth in biodegradable packaging, engineered wood, and alternative plastics — all areas where hemp hurd plays a pivotal role due to its renewability and low environmental impact. Regulatory support is strengthening the hemp industry, as governments and businesses worldwide incorporate hemp-based products into their carbon reduction strategies. This collective momentum positions hemp hurd as a key player in the future of sustainable innovation.
